Biology and Ecological Functioning
In the preceding section the various environmental factors influencing
CFT species and communities were reviewed. The primary effect of these environmental
factors is to determine which CFT species can potentially inhabit a given location, and
this will depend on the biological characteristics of each species - such as size, habit,
feeding method, and reproductive mode - as discussed in this section. However, not every
species occurs throughout its potential range - its realised distribution is moderated by
biological interactions such as competition, grazing and predation. These are also
reviewed below.
