Empafish (Marine Protected Areas as tools for Fisheries management and conservation)
Empafish is an EU project aiming to investigate the potential of different regimes of MPA across Europe as measures to protect sensitive and endangered species, habitats and ecosystems from the effects of fishing. Empafish also aims to develop quantitative methods to assess the effects of MPAs and to provide the EU with a set of integrated measures and policy proposals for the implementations of MPAs as fisheries and ecosystem management tools.

MedPAN (The network of managers of Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean)
The network of managers of Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean. The aim of the network is to facilitate exchange between Mediterranean marine protected areas in order to improve the efficiency of the management of these areas.

National Marine Protected Areas Center (US)
The National Marine Protected Areas Centre provides information and resources that assist in national dialogue and decision-making about MPAs in the United States.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 refers to a network of protected sites consisting of Special Areas of Conservation (identified under the Habitats Directive) and Special Protected Areas (identified under the Birds Directive). There are over 20,000 sites in the Natura 2000 network, covering almost a fifth of the EU territory.

PROTECT (Ecosystem conservation and fisheries management through Marine Protected Areas)
PROTECT seeks to provide European policy-makers with improved tools for the identification, design and management of MPAs. It will bring together the collective expertise of 17 leading European marine research institutes who will evaluate the potential of MPAs as a tool to protect sensitive species and habitats against the effect of fishing, develop scientific methods and information products to design and evaluate the effect of MPAs, co-operate with other EU-funded projects, such as EMPAFISH, and organise a series of thematic workshops and compile reports that will draw from experience and lessons learnt from specific case studies.

Protect Planet Ocean
Protect Planet Ocean is a collaboration of global conservation organisations aimed at promoting marine protected areas as a method of conservation.

Protected Areas Learning Network (PALnet)
The Protected Area Learning Network makes information about protected area related projects freely available to registered users. The database includes but is not limited to useful material such as project names and descriptions, websites and the names of contact persons related to the work. Registered users are encouraged to upload information about protected area related projects to the database.

World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA)
The World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) is the world's premier network of protected area expertise. WCPA's international mission is to promote the establishment and effective management of a world-wide representative network of terrestrial and marine protected areas as an integral contribution to the IUCN mission. WCPA works by helping governments and others plan protected areas and integrate them into all sectors; by providing strategic advice to policy makers; by strengthening capacity and investment in protected areas; and by convening the diverse constituency of protected area stakeholders to address challenging issues. For more than 50 years IUCN and WCPA have been at the forefront of global action on protected areas.
